It was built in 1898-99 by James and Lister Lea for the Holt Brewery Company, of Red brick and terracotta.

After the interior was vandalised in 1984, it was sympathetically restored.
But the pub closed down by around 2015 (or earlier?), and has been for sale by Siddall Jones, ever since.

As of January 2023, the for sale sign has gone at The Swan & Mitre, but it is still closed. But looks in good condition.
